Those who will never go home again...

Wed Nov 4, 2009, 4:49 PM
Today I came across the remains of at least two British soldiers of the great war while photographing some bunkers in a small forest near Zillebeke, Belgium. I warned the authorities, then went on photographing in a totally different mood. Hopefully these soldiers will soon be laid to rest in a real cemetary, after all they went trough and did for us,they truly deserve this!

Wow. Good for you. And much surprise that the first person to find them is you, 90 years after the fact.

It isn't that amazing in this area actually. There are still tens of thousands of victim's bodies lying on the former battlegrounds. Some bodies are buried only a few centimetres deep and every year some of these emerge due to erosion and rain. So it is very well possible that these bodies were not visible last year and that other victims emerge within a year on places where nothing can be seen today. That's just the way it goes around ypres. Though it stays a very impressive moment to come across some fallen soldiers...

I do not make beautiful pictures, nature does.

Goodness. Well, I suppose it does make sense, but still...it must have been a bit eerie to discover.

I only have pictures from the forest and the bunkers, there was no way I could take a respectful photo of these victims cause there bones were shattered everywhere, so I chose not to take pictures at all at the spot. But I received confirmation that they will be reburied in december and I will of course take pictures on that ceremony.
